Try hamachi, it always requires some fiddling around but when PINGs goes trough to your friend etc. I have tried it but the ones which want to join me are always getting a endless "resolving host connection" screen. I always took it as a lost cause to do anything more complicated than a LAN connection. Shit man, I'm sure there's something floating around but I never figured that out. I remember there was software to host those games but they are all down. I want to play with friends on other networks. I've been playing pirated games through LAN like this for a long time, I don't think there are any serious security issues. Just open the program and start a local game like you would if you bought it, should work fine provided everyone you want to play with does the same. I play Civ 5 with my wife over LAN and we don't use special software. You can play pirated games with other pirated games through LAN connections.
